HULL MONITORING SYSTEM KEYNOTE

Sjoerd van Herk, senior naval architect at Heesen, and Jos Verbruggen, Heesen’s manager of shipbuilding and engineering, took to the stage in Amsterdam in November to talk audiences through the innovative Hull Monitoring System aboard Heesen’s 80-metre project. The event took place at Metstrade, the largest leisure marine industry event on the maritime calendar, attended by key leaders in the yachting industry.

“The premise of the build challenge was how to make the yacht strong enough considering its significant 80-metre length paired with the shallow depth of the hull and the requested high top speed,” says Verbruggen. “We typically use tank testing to check if the hull shape delivers optimum efficiency. In this case, we also used it to monitor the hull’s ‘bending movements’ in several locations.”

The rigorous tank testing gave Heesen’s in-house experts a good initial indication if the shipyard’s existing hulls were good enough for a large aluminium yacht travelling at high speeds, as well as that Class bending rules were in line with measured values. Once built, the 80-metre was equipped with an innovative Hull Monitoring System developed in-house by Heesen that is fixed in various locations on the boat to measure acceleration and tension in the structure using strain gauges. That, in turn, is connected to a smart computer system that measures the forces on the yacht when at sea.

The Hull Monitoring System provides the foresight to finetune a yacht’s course at sea, forecasting how it will respond to high stresses in certain sea conditions. So far, it has been used to measure forces on the 80-metre during sea trials, which measured only minor stresses as expected due to the smooth sailing conditions. The results from tougher sea conditions with heavier waves are yet to be received, but expectations run high.
