A masterclass in close-quarters manoeuvring.

Watch the 50-metre, all-aluminium FDHF yacht ELA arriving at her berth in the Superyacht Village for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

After a journey from Lauderdale Marine Center down the New River and a three-hour wait for the dock, the real challenge began. ELA contended with a 10-knot southeasterly wind and a half-knot southerly current, forcing a difficult angled approach to avoid a pylon on the starboard side.

This is where the ‘human factor’ becomes paramount. It’s a fantastic display of teamwork and clear communication:

The First Officer on the stern, calling distances and guiding the captain clear of the pylon.

The Bosun on the bow, coordinating movements—at one stage bringing the bow within a foot of the dock to allow adjustments on the stern.

Two interior crew on station with roaming fenders, demonstrating that all hands are ready to protect the vessel.

As Captain Jake noted, while ELA ‘responds well and quick,’ it’s the well-trained crew that makes the difference. ‘Close quarters can be scary, but it’s easier when you have a well-trained crew… It takes a lot of small inputs at the right time to dock.’

This is the reliability and professionalism that is the perfect complement to a superyacht.
