The House of Versace celebrates the Year of the Snake with a fantastical film that celebrates the artistry of Eastern cultures in a traditional Chinese water ink style. The resulting animated film is a unique tribute to Chinese culture that shares warm wishes for the new year ahead.
The film tells the story of how the snake became a totem in the Chinese zodiac symbolizing protection and auspiciousness. In the film, a young boy plays in the mountains. Captivated by the beautiful scenery at sunset, he gets lost and unable to find his way home. As panic sets in, a snake appears and presents the boy with a talisman that can help guide him back home. Once the auspicious snake leaves the boy, a golden path emerges, and by following it, the boy is able to leave the deep mountains. It is said that this snake, known as the Si Snake, is the guardian of the boundary between the human world and spiritual realm. Only with its talisman can one return safely to the human world. As such, the snake is included in the zodiac as a symbol of protection and auspicious wisdom.
This imaginative interpretation of the Si Snake story is a tribute to Chinese culture that also shares in Versace’s own iconicity and values. The film shows the Si Snake resonating with the image of Versace’s Medusa signifier, as well as an interplay with Versace design codes including the Barocco print and geometric Greca pattern—immediately recognizable icons of the House which continue to be reinterpreted and are a constant source of inspiration for Versace collections.
