Art handlers carefully install Jesús Rafael Soto’s ‘Pénétrable’ as part of the #ArtBaselMiamiBeach Meridians sector.
Consisting of installations made of hundreds of thin, translucent plastic or metal tubes suspended from a frame, the series comprises outsized geometric shapes.
By inverting the pedestal, Soto released the sculpture from the ground, encouraging spectators to complete the work by traversing his towering forms and experiencing a new concept of space.
‘My concept of space is very different from that of the Renaissance,’ the artist admitted, ‘where man was in front of space, he was the viewer, the judge of that space…[With] the Pénétrable, I reveal that man…is part of space. And this is the sensation of those who enter them, and the feeling of joy and elation that you witness is similar to getting in the water and being completely liberated from gravity.’
