Guillochage is a decorative craft that has its origins in the 16th century. In its most authentic form, dial guillochage consists of individual repeating lines, cut by a hand-turned lathe, that intersect and overlap to create a graphic motif. Practitioners of this art, known as guillocheurs, can train for decades before they are considered masters of their craft. These repeating lines combine and intersect, forming geometric patterns that impart texture to a plain surface, playing with shadow and light in subtle ways.
For the first time, Richard Mille is adopting this artisanal guillochage technique but with a twist. Instead of the familiar patterns of traditional guillochage, the RM 07 01 Colored Ceramics uses it in bold new ways, sculpting a single large scale dial motif that is part botanical, part sunburst, part Art Deco, and all Richard Mille.
