The 77th edition of the 628nm Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race got underway today. The offshore challenge has been a key element in Rolex’s longstanding relationship with yachting for over 20 years. A fleet of 109 yachts, crewed by determined and skilled teams, enjoyed blue skies and a 10 – 15 knot north to north-easterly breeze that strengthened once out of Sydney Harbour, encouraging teams to hoist their spinnakers and deliver a stirring sight. The traditional 26 December start drew thousands of onlookers, both on the land and water, and who marveled at the stunning spectacle. The downwind conditions forecast for the first two days are tantalizingly close to offering a record-breaking opportunity for the fastest entries, while the change in wind direction expected on the third day could deliver a bruising encounter for the smaller yachts.
