Phyllida Lloyd and Whitney White, Rolex Mentor and Protégée, Theatre, 2020–2022

Drawn together by a mutual love of Shakespeare and of music, as well as an interest in telling women’s stories, Phyllida Lloyd, London-based director of such worldwide hits as the musical and film ‘Mamma Mia’, and American director, actor and musician Whitney White, found that their relationship in the 2020−2022 cycle of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative quickly grew. They soon developed deeper synergies as they explored the influences shaping the stage today. The process of asking for advice became a two-way street between Lloyd and her protégée. Established in 2002, the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative exemplifies the company’s pursuit of excellence, symbolized by the word “Perpetual”. The programme was established to aid in the transmission of artistic knowledge and craft from one generation to the next.
