Paris queer, des salons aux interzones

Claire Le Restif, Curator and Director, Ivry-sur-Seine
Valentin Noujaïm, Artist and Filmmaker, Athens & Paris
Moderator: Quentin Dubois, Temporary researcher and teaching assistant at the University of Paris-VIII Vincennes, Paris

Since the beginning of the 20th century, Paris has been a beacon of the homosexual artistic avant-garde. From Natalie Clifford Barney’s lesbian ‘Temple of Friendship’ to Claude Cahun, from the gay counter-Modernism of Christian Bérard to Jean Cocteau, from the photographs of Hervé Guibert to the autofictional films of Guillaume Dustan, Parishas always championed dissident love. Having recently been the object of several books and exhibitions, this militant and exalted history will be evoked through works, places, historic and contemporay figures in a Paris that is still one of the epicenters of Queer cultures.

Claire Le Restif is the curator and director of Centre d’art contemporain d’Ivry – le Crédac. She was curator of the Fondation Pernod Ricard Prize in 2019, and the Paris Internationale art fair in 2020. She is a member of the acquisition committees of the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, and is on the boards of the Centre National des Arts Plastiques and TRAM.

Valentin Noujaïm is a filmmaker whose work challenges societal narratives, focusing on historically marginalized communities. A graduate of La Fémis and of Städelschule, his films explore diverse formats including 16 mm, archival footage, and digital media. His trilogy ‘La Défense’ includes Pacific Club (2022), nominated for a César, and To Exist Under Permanent Suspicion (2024), which premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Noujaïm’s work has been featured at major festivals and exhibitions and he has held residencies at Villa Medici and Lafayette Anticipations.

Quentin Dubois is a philosopher at the Université Paris VIII-Vincennes, where he teaches the libidinal economies of Pierre Klossowski and Félix Guattari. Within the sexual dissidence journal Trou Noir, he is developing the idea of a counter-civilizational queer. A book entitled Histoire de l’Anus. Essai d’économie perverse is due to be published by Météores in Brussels in 2025.

The Art Basel Paris 2024 Conversations program is curated by Pierre-Alexandre Mateos and Charles Teyssou.
