Arriving in Paris: Meditations on motherhood by Senegalese sculptor Seyni Awa Camara
Arriving at Paris+ par Art Basel are two terracotta sculptures by the Senegalese artist Seyni Awa Camara. The Wolof artist was born in the 1940s, one of three triplets – a mythic origin that evokes the interplay between the visible and invisible worlds in African cosmogony. She was raised by her mother, a potter, who taught Camara about sculpture as a child. To this day, Camara models her clay in front of her home and fires the work in an open-hearth kiln. An inner calling guides her work: many pieces reflect a world of animals and humans, or as seen here, maternal figures surrounded by children.

Deux sculptures en terre cuite de l’artiste sénégalaise Seyni Awa Camara arrivent à Paris+ par Art Basel. L’artiste wolof est née dans les années 1940, l’une de triplées – une origine mythique qui évoque l’interaction entre les mondes visibles et invisibles dans la cosmogonie africaine. Elle a été élevée par sa mère, potière, qui lui a enseigné la sculpture dès l’enfance. Aujourd’hui encore, Seyni Awa Camara modèle l’argile devant sa maison et cuit ses œuvres dans un four à ciel ouvert. Un appel intérieur guide son travail : de nombreuses pièces dépeignent un monde d’animaux et d’humains ou, comme ici, des figures maternelles entourées d’enfants.
