_Art Basel’s ‘Meet the artists’ series presents contemporary creatives shaping today’s cultural landscape_
In this episode of ‘Meet the artists,’ we join Tammy Nguyen at her bucolic studio in Easton, Connecticut. There, the artist intertwines personal and political narratives in her paintings, works on paper, and artist books to explore the complex interplay between identity, geopolitics, and lesser-known histories.
Across her mediums, figures and characters ‘are constantly collapsing with their environments,’ she explains in the film. The result is a dynamic interplay that mirrors the intricate relationship between humans and the spaces they inhabit. Her work swarms with beings, vegetation, animals, and insects, which frequently have a deeper symbolic meaning.
Nguyen’s curiosity about the formation of ideologies and subsequent paradigm shifts also serves as a guiding force. ‘I became interested in how people make decisions based on how they were brought up,’ she says. As the founder of the independent Passenger Pigeon Press, which unites the work of scientists, journalists, creative writers, and artists, her artist books offer possibilities beyond those of painting or printmaking. ‘The book,’ she says, ‘opens up to be a kind of a terrain on itself.’
Tammy Nguyen is represented by Lehmann Maupin (New York, Hong Kong, Seoul, and London). Her first solo museum exhibition in the US, ‘Tammy Nguyen’ is on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston through January 28, 2024.
