Rivane Neuenschwander seeks to understand the issues that pervade our time. Her multi-disciplinary practice encompasses film, installation, painting, sculpture, and –in reaction to the recent government of Jair Bolsonaro – protest actions. While conceptually, the works find their starting point in her home country of Brazil, the themes they address – the rise of the far-right, environmental collapse, and Indigenous rights – are relevant across the globe. ‘We need to explore issues like fear, resentment, and anger, because these feelings can easily be manipulated and channeled into a very dangerous and destructive side,’ she says in the film.
In this episode of ‘Meet the artists’, Art Basel visits Neuenschwander in her São Paulo studio and joins the environmental protests she’s organized that have artists, activists, and cultural workers taking to the streets dressed as plants and animals.
Rivane Neuenschwander is represented by Stephen Friedman Gallery (London), Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro), and Tanya Bonakdar Gallery (New York, Los Angeles).
