Professor Jean Michel Massing Department of History of Art, University of Cambridge and King’s College, Cambridge. He talks about the The Portuguese Luxury Trade in the North of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf.
My contribution, looking more specifically at diplomatic gifts, complements my paper given at the Orientality: Cultural Orientalism and Mentality conference, held in Cambridge in 2013. This year I will deal, among other, with the splendid, large Venetian casket made of cut-crystal, black and gold lacquered wood, gilt silver and bronze, which was given, between 1608 and 1609, by the king of Ormuz to Dom Frei Aleixo de Menezes, Archbishop and Governor of Goa, who offered it to the Convent of the Aghostinos (convento da Nossa Senhora da Graça) in Lisbon, where it became a tabernacle (now Lisbon, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga).
