For over three decades, Zoe Leonard has been taking on some of the most critical issues of our time, including the AIDS crisis, immigration and displacement, and gentrification. In her photographs she is a keen observer of the shifts in everyday moments that imbue a place with its unique spirit. Her subtle, documentary approach to photography is reflected in this episode of ‘Inner Worlds’, as she considers what her studio in New York’s Brooklyn Navy Yards means to her as a place of work and experimentation. ‘It’s a space where I can make a lot of mistakes.’ she says. In this episode, we delve into significant projects, including her monumental series Al río / To the River, which examines the 1200-mile Rio Grande river as the border between Southern Texas and Northern Mexico.
Zoe Leonard is represented by Hauser & Wirth (Zurich, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York, Somerset, St. Moritz, Gstaad, Menorca, Monaco) and Galerie Gisela Capitain (Cologne, Berlin). The exhibition ‘Al río / To the River’ will be on view at Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris from October 15, 2022 – January 29, 2023.
