_The Inner Worlds film series visits creatives in the places that inspire them_
Few choreographers have pushed contemporary dance more than Wayne McGregor. For the last 30 years, the Londoner has drawn on art, philosophy, technology, and science to expand the possibilities of the dancing body. In doing so, he’s transformed movement into a medium to investigate the world.
In the latest episode of ‘Inner Worlds’, we visit McGregor at Here East, his studio in London. There, the rooms are like empty canvases that leave space for imagination to take hold. ‘Beginning is so often the hardest thing to do,’ he says. ‘You really start with nothing, only the bodies in the room.’
McGregor’s new production for The Royal Ballet, Untitled, 2023, premieres on June 9 at the Royal Opera House in London. The score is by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir, the lighting design is by Lucy Carter, and the set design is by the late Cuban-born American artist Carmen Herrera.
