Digital Dialogues | What is Digital Art?

Art Basel Miami Beach 2024 December 5th

Christiane Paul (Curator, Digital Art, Whitney Museum)
Casey Reas, Artist, Founder of Feral File
Tina Rivers Ryan, Editor in Chief, Artforum

Although artists have been using computers to make art for over half a century, conversations around “digital art” remain troubled by basic questions: Are computers a tool or a medium for artists? To what extent are digital “objects” immaterial or material? How do we distinguish between a digital medium, genre, style, and movement? How does digital art relate to other contemporary art forms? In this panel discussion, Christiane Paul, Casey Reas, and Tina Rivers Ryan will draw on their experience working with digital art to address these and other questions, while also explaining how recent technological and artistic developments (including the rise of NFTs and AI) fit into its long history.
