Conversations | Time Travelers: When Artists Remix the Past to Reframe the Present

Conversations | Time Travelers: When Artists Remix the Past to Reframe the Present
Art Basel Hong Kong 2023, March 23

What can we learn from artists who take on the role of historian by recovering, re-telling and remixing stories and testimonies from the past in their work? Artists presenting at Art Basel Hong Kong discuss how they uncover, recut, and expand personal and collective histories to reveal the nuances and complexities that not only shape the present but also perspectives on possible futures.

‣ Sim Chi Yin, artist, Zilberman Gallery, and Hanart TZ Gallery
‣ Mónica de Miranda, artist, Sabrina Amrani
‣ Kenneth Tam, artist, Commonwealth and Council
‣ Moderator: Ho Tzu Nyen, artist, Kiang Malingue

‣ Sim Chi Yin’s research-based practice focuses on history, conflict and trans-generational inheritance. Her project One Day We’ll Understand —encompassing photographic and filmic installations, glass plates, books and a forthcoming theatrical performance — examines the memory of the anti-colonial war in British Malaya. She is based in New York as an artist fellow on the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program.

‣ Mónica de Miranda is an Angolan/ Portuguese visual artist, photographer, filmmaker, and researcher who works on postcolonial issues of geography and history. De Miranda’s work is research-based and looks at the convergence of politics, gender, memory and space. Her works consist of video, photography and installation in its expanded forms and on the boundaries between fiction and documentary.

‣ Kenneth Tam is an interdisciplinary artist who works across video, sculpture, installation, movement, performance and photography. Tam’s work examines themes including the performance of masculinity, the transformative potential of ritual and expressions of intimacy within groups. Tam is an Assistant Professor at Rice University in Houston, USA.

‣ Ho Tzu Nyen makes films, installations and performances that often begin as engagements with historical and theoretical texts. Recent exhibitions of his works have been held at the Hammer Museum (2022), Toyota Municipal Museum of Art (2021), and Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (2021).

This talk was conducted in English, with simultaneous interpretation available in Cantonese and Mandarin.

The Art Basel Hong Kong 2023 Conversations program is curated by Stephanie Bailey.
