Conversations | The Artist and the Collector: Julie Curtiss and Hélène Nguyen-Ban

Conversations | The Artist and the Collector: Julie Curtiss and Hélène Nguyen-Ban
Paris + par Art Basel 2022, October 20

The relationship that develops between an artist and a collector is at the heart of the artworld. Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein, Marcel Duchamp and Katherine Dreier, Max Ernst and Peggy Guggenheim, and Andy Warhol and Alexander Iolas are all examples of artistic collaborations that have changed art history. This conversation between Julie Curtiss and Hélène Nguyen-Ban lifts the veil on the connection between two singular individuals shaped by their shared vision of art.

‣ Julie Curtiss, Artist, New York
‣ Hélène Nguyen-Ban, Collector, founder & CEO at Docent, London
‣ Moderator: Julie Boukobza, curator and Head of the LUMA Arles Residency Program

‣ Julie Curtiss focuses on the relationship between nature and culture in her figurative painting, sculpture and gouache on paper, exposing and reworking female archetypes through a surrealist sense of the uncanny. ‘In my images, I enjoy the complementarity of humour and darkness, the uncanny and the mundane, grotesque shapes and vivid colours’, she has commented. Born and raised in Paris, Curtiss studied at l’Ėcole des Beaux-Arts before moving first to Japan and then to New York, where she now lives and works. Employing a highly stylised visual language, she draws on a history of figurative painting including 18th- and 19th-century French painting, as well as the Chicago Imagists and the ‘pop’ imagery of comic books, manga and illustration.

‣ Founder and CEO of Docent, Helene Nguyen-Ban’s first foray into contemporary art as a collector was driven by the same curiosity and passion that would later chart her path as an esteemed gallerist and a tech start-up founder, Docent, the first mobile app powered by machine learning to discover and collect contemporary art within a highly curated and personalised environment. She brings years of expert insight and research from the field as well as a boundless passion for innovation in art. On top of her current role at Docent, she also serves on the International Council of Tate, the Asia-Pacific Committee at Centre Pompidou, and is Chair of the board of Fluxus Art Projects.

‣ Julie Boukobza is a curator based in Paris, Head of the Luma Arles Residency Program.

The Conversations program for Paris + par Art Basel 2022 is curated by Pierre-Alexandre Mateos and Charles Teyssou.
