Conversations | The 90s | Sonia Boyce DBE RA | Guest-curated by Edward Enninful OBE

Sonia Boyce DBE RA, Artist, London
Edward Enninful OBE, Cofounder and Chief Creative Officer, EE72, London

Edward Enninful OBE will be joined by Sonia Boyce DBE RA, the pioneering British Afro-Caribbean artist whose collaborative and improvisational practice has been reshaping ideas of authorship and identity since the 1980s. Working across video, sound, drawing, and performance, Boyce has always foregrounded collective creation, often working with other artists, and eroding the line between creator and audience. Her early work interrogated memory, race, and the politics of visibility, positioning her as a foundational figure in British contemporary art. Boyce represented Great Britain at the 2022 Venice Biennale, where she was awarded the Golden Lion for Best National Participation. In this conversation, Boyce and Enninful will reflect on experimentation, Black British cultural life, and how collaboration can disrupt the status quo.

Sonia Boyce will be featured in ‘The 90s’, a landmark exhibition curated by Edward Enninful at Tate Britain (October 1, 2026 to February 14, 2027).

Sonia Boyce DBE RA (b. 1962, London) is an interdisciplinary artist and academic working across film, drawing, photography, print, sound, and installation. Boyce came to prominence in the early 1980s as a key figure in the British Black Arts Movement with figurative drawings and collages that addressed issues of race and gender in Britain. Since the 1990s, Boyce has shifted significantly to embrace a social practice that invites improvisation, collaboration, movement, and sound. Her practice today is focused on questions of authorship and cultural difference.

Edward Enninful OBE is one of the leading voices in today’s creative industry, known for impactful storytelling and championing diverse, emerging talent. Born to a Ghanaian army officer and a seamstress, he became the youngest-ever international fashion editor at i-D magazine at 18, and later contributed to Italian Vogue, where he spearheaded the groundbreaking ‘Black Issue’.

He has held roles at American Vogue, W Magazine, and British Vogue – the only Black editor-in-chief in Vogue’s history – transforming the publication into a diverse, inclusive, multi-platform brand. Awarded an OBE for his contributions to diversity in fashion, Enninful is also the cofounder and chief creative officer of EE72, a global media company producing transformational content, immersive experiences, and 72 Magazine, its first-ever print and digital venture amplifying diverse voices.
