Conversations | The 90s | Juergen Teller | Guest curated by Edward Enninful

Juergen Teller, Photographer, London
Edward Enninful OBE, Cofounder and Chief Creative Officer, EE72, London

Edward Enninful OBE sits down with Juergen Teller, the German photographer whose unpolished aesthetic redefined fashion imagery in the 90s. Teller came to prominence with emotionally raw, snapshot-like portraits that blurred the lines between commercial campaigns and personal narrative. Working with i-D, The Face, Marc Jacobs, and Helmut Lang, he introduced a visual language defined by imperfection, intimacy, and irreverence. This rare conversation revisits the iconic moments – and unlikely muses – that brought forth the gritty, emotionally charged codes of the decade.

Juergen Teller will be featured in ‘The 90s’, a landmark exhibition curated by Edward Enninful at Tate Britain (October 1, 2026 to February 14, 2027).

Juergen Teller (b. 1964, Erlangen) is a London-based photographer celebrated for his raw, unfiltered style that blends fashion, portraiture, and self-portraiture. After studying at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photographie in Munich, he moved to London in 1986 and soon became a leading figure in contemporary photography. Recipient of the Citibank Photography Prize (2003) and the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award (2018), his work has been exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, and the Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn.

Edward Enninful OBE is one of the leading voices in today’s creative industry, known for impactful storytelling and championing diverse, emerging talent. Born to a Ghanaian army officer and a seamstress, he became the youngest-ever international fashion editor at i-D magazine at 18, and later contributed to Italian Vogue, where he spearheaded the groundbreaking ‘Black Issue’.

He has held roles at American Vogue, W Magazine, and British Vogue – the only Black editor-in-chief in Vogue’s history – transforming the publication into a diverse, inclusive, multi-platform brand. Awarded an OBE for his contributions to diversity in fashion, Enninful is also the cofounder and chief creative officer of EE72, a global media company producing transformational content, immersive experiences, and 72 Magazine, its first-ever print and digital venture amplifying diverse voices.
