Conversations | Photography now: Tyler Mitchell

Tyler Mitchell, Artist, photographer, and filmmaker, Brooklyn
Clothilde Morette, MEP artistic director, Paris

As his first French institutional solo show ‘Wish This Was Real’ opens at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Tyler Mitchell joins Clothilde Morette to discuss photography’s evolving role in shaping cultural memory. From fashion editorials to fine art, Mitchell’s luminous images of Black life, rooted in leisure, beauty, and self-determination, are reshaping today’s visual lexicon. Together, they will unpack questions of authorship, aesthetics, and visibility in an age when images circulate faster than ever and remain deeply charged and contested. This conversation offers a rare window into the mind of a boundary-breaking artist – and the visual politics defining a new generation.

Tyler Mitchell (b. 1995, Atlanta) is an artist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Brooklyn. He earned a BA in Film and Television from NYU Tisch School of the Arts in 2017. Mitchell’s work introduces new narratives of Black beauty and desire, blending history with fictionalized visions of the future. His images emphasize play, empowerment, and self-determination. His work is held in major collections worldwide, and he has collaborated with leading magazines and editorial platforms.

Clothilde Morette is Artistic Director of MEP (Maison Européenne de la Photographie), Paris. Her responsibilities include oversight of the exhibition and events programme, as well as curatorial direction of The Studio: MEP’s exhibition space dedicated to emerging talent. Recent projects at MEP have included curating the first retrospective of artist Samuel Fosso; Rineke Dijkstra’s exhibition “I See You”; Viviane Sassen’s solo show “Phosphor: Art and Fashion”, and the collective exhibition “Science/Fiction — A Non-History of Plants”. She also teach contemporary photography at l’ECAL (Ecole d’Art Cantonal de Lausanne). She also practices independently as both a critic and curator, working between literary narratives and both historic and contemporary art. She is a founding editor and co-editor of the forthcoming publication LEONORA with Morël Books, which explores affinities between the short stories of Leonora Carrington and contemporary artistic practice.
