Conversations | Artists’ Influencers: Hervé Télémaque, Françoise Vergès and Hans Ulrich Obrist

Conversations | Artists’ Influencers: Hervé Télémaque, Françoise Vergès and Hans Ulrich Obrist
Paris + par Art Basel 2022, October 21

Who influences whom? How do artistic kinships develop? Conceived by Hans Ulrich Obrist, this series of conversations brings artists together with the figures who have significantly influenced their artistic practice. The artist Hervé Télémaque and the theoretician Françoise Vergès meet to discuss their passions and concerns.

‣ Hervé Télémaque, Artist, Paris
‣ Françoise Vergès, Political Theorist, Feminist, and Decolonial Activist, Paris
‣ Moderator: Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director at the Serpentine Galleries, London

‣ Hervé Télémaque has created since the late 1950s, an expansive body of work with a unique and playful visual vocabulary, featuring abstract gestures, cartoon-like imagery, and mixed media compositions. Through paintings, drawings, collages, objects and assemblages, he brings together striking combinations of historical and literary references with those of consumer and popular culture. Incorporating images and experiences from his daily life, the artist’s extensive body of work consistently draws connections between the realms of interior consciousness, social experience and the complex relationships between image and language.

‣ Françoise Vergès (Ph.D. Political Science, Berkeley, 1995) writes books and articles in French and English on colonial slavery, Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon, postcolonial psychiatry, the capitalocene, decolonial feminism, artists’ work, and the decolonization of the museum. She is a decolonial feminist activist, an independent curator, and a film writer. Latest publications: A Feminist Theory of Violence (2021) and with Seumboy, On Colonial Violence in the Public Space (2021).

‣ Hans Ulrich Obrist (born in 1968, Zurich, Switzerland) is the Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries in London, Senior Advisor at LUMA Arles, and Senior Artistic Advisor at The Shed in New York. Prior to this, he was the Curator of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Since his first show World Soup (The Kitchen Show) in 1991, he has curated more than 350 shows. Obrist’s recent publications include Ways of Curating (2015), The Age of Earthquakes (2015), Lives of the Artists, Lives of Architects (2015), Mondialité (2017), Somewhere Totally Else (2018) The Athens Dialogues (2018), Maria Lassnig: Letters (2020), Entrevistas Brasileiras: Volume 2 (2020), and 140 Ideas for Planet Earth (2021).
