Carrie Mae Weems and Camila Rodríguez Triana, Rolex Mentor and Protégée, Visual Arts, 2020–2022

Carrie Mae Weems was drawn to choose Camila Rodríguez Triana as a protégée in the 2020−2022 cycle of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, as, although the young Colombian visual artist came from a different country and different world, there was a deep connection. Both mentor and protégée have a shared interest in the politics of racial identity, as well as a strand of memory and remembrance in the pieces they create – affinities that made Weems believe she could guide the young artist who was trying to repair “the violent memory” of her history and ancestors through her work. Rodríguez Triana’s installations use stitching, thread and textiles to express her ideas, working through her thoughts about Colombia’s past and struggle into a different future. Established in 2002, the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative exemplifies the company’s pursuit of excellence, symbolized by the word “Perpetual”. The programme was established to aid in the transmission of artistic knowledge and craft from one generation to the next.
