Defying categorization, provocative artist Leonor Fini challenged traditional gender roles
This presentation of works by Leonor Fini (1907–1996) at Art Basel Miami Beach spans the Argentine-Italian artist’s six-decade career. It includes paintings, costume and theater designs, drawings, and sculpture. Self-taught, Fini was inspired by Italian Mannerism and German Romanticism. She defied categorization throughout her career, emerging as one of the twentieth century’s most significant yet misunderstood female artists. Often labeled a Surrealist, Fini eschewed that label, charting her own course in Modernism. As seen here, her paintings – a captivating fusion of dreamlike fantasy and the macabre – often reverse gender roles, featuring bold female figures and passive men.
Leonor Fini is presented in Art Basel Miami Beach’s Galleries sector by Galerie Minsky (Paris) and Gallery Weinstein (San Francisco).
