A history of autonomy – The Perpetual rotor


Since the introduction of the Perpetual rotor in 1931, many Rolex advertisements have highlighted this innovation, a true revolution in the watchmaking world. With the slightest movement of the wrist, gravity causes the oscillating weight inside the watch to rotate freely in either direction, creating kinetic energy. This is fed to the mainspring that regulates its release, allowing the watch to self-wind. Thanks to the Perpetual rotor, the comfort, waterproofness and precision of the watch were enhanced. Freedom was a Rolex.
