Lin-Manuel Miranda and Agustina San Martin, Rolex Mentor and Protégée, Open Category, 2020–2022

As part of the 2020−2022 cycle of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, Lin-Manuel Miranda and his protégée Argentinian filmmaker Agustina San Martín met while he was making his film directorial debut after a string of Tony award-winning musicals including ‘Hamilton’ and ‘In the Heights’. There was a bolt of artistic recognition between the two artists that acted as a creative stimulus and resulted in an instant connection. With her experience in filmmaking, San Martín became an invaluable sounding board to her mentor. For the protégée, the interaction was “eye-opening” and empowering. She has made plans to broaden the range of her work from independent films to also apply her unique style to large-scale narrative films. Established in 2002, the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative exemplifies the company’s pursuit of excellence, symbolized by the word “Perpetual”. The programme was established to aid in the transmission of artistic knowledge and craft from one generation to the next.
