Conversations | Ten years of change in the global art market

Presented in partnership with UBS

Dr Clare McAndrew, Founder, Arts Economics
Adrian Zuercher, Co-Head Global Asset Allocation and Co-Head Global Investment Management APAC at UBS Chief Investment Office, Hong Kong
Moderator: Angelle Siyang-Le, Director, Art Basel Hong Kong

This panel brought together leading voices to reflect on the seismic shifts that have shaped the art market over the past decade. Collecting has fundamentally changed as a new generation of collectors is making their imprint on the market: they are digitally savvy, female-focused, and are starting to reap the benefits of the Great Wealth Transfer. Simultaneously, the focus on historical works, particularly Surrealism, continues, as collectors seek to make sense of this current moment by looking to the past. New markets have risen, particularly in Asia – India, Thailand, and Indonesia are buoyant, with new galleries and museums opening apace.
Drawing on 10 years of The Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report written by Arts Economics, the speakers shared data-driven insights into the market’s evolution and the forces reshaping its future. Specialists offered firsthand perspectives on the rapid expansion of Asian collecting and the region’s growing influence on global market dynamics.

Dr Clare McAndrew is a cultural economist who specializes in the arts, antiques and collectibles markets. She completed her PhD in economics at Trinity College Dublin in 2001, where she lectured and taught economics for four years. McAndrew set up Arts Economics in 2005 to focus her efforts on art market research and analysis, and works with a network of private consultants and academic scholars in different regions around the world providing research and consulting services to the global art trade and financial sector.

Adrian Zuercher is Co-Head Global Asset Allocation and Co-Head Global Investment Management APAC at UBS Chief Investment Office. In his Global Asset Allocation role, he is responsible for multi-asset portfolio solutions. He co-chairs the tactical investment forum, the global portfolio construction meeting, and is a member of the global investment committee, which defines the UBS CIO house-view. In his Global IM APAC capacity, he is responsible for investment fund selection, portfolio management, and product development.

Angelle Siyang-Le is the director of Art Basel Hong Kong, the company’s flagship event in Asia. Prior to her appointment as director in 2022, Siyang-Le oversaw the business development of Art Basel in Greater China, as well as show strategy and gallery relations for the Hong Kong show. Siyang-Le joined Art Basel in 2012 from The Farook Collection, a private collection in the UAE. Concurrently, she managed the not-for-profit art space, Traffic and the artist studio, Satellite, in Dubai.
