Conversations | The 90s | Mark Leckey | Guest curated by Edward Enninful

Mark Leckey, Artist, London
Edward Enninful OBE, Cofounder and Chief Creative Officer, EE72, London

Edward Enninful OBE meets Mark Leckey, the British artist whose work defined a new kind of cultural archaeology in the 1990s. Blending video, sound, and sculpture, Leckey explored nostalgia, technology, and working-class identity with striking intensity. His 1999 breakthrough video Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore became a cult classic, collaging UK dance scenes into a hypnotic meditation on memory and becoming. With Enninful, Leckey reflects on how the decade’s subcultures, machines, and personal rituals have informed his practice to this day.

Mark Leckey will be featured in ‘The 90s’, a landmark exhibition curated by Edward Enninful at Tate Britain (October 1,  2026 to February 14, 2027).

Mark Leckey (born 1964, Birkenhead), is a contemporary artist working with a variety of media including film, sound, sculpture and performance. His work explores the relationship between popular culture and technology and explores the subjects of anxiety, class and nostalgia. In 2008 he won the Turner Prize for his exhibition Industrial Light and Magic. Recent solo exhibitions include Lafayette Anticipations (Paris), Tate Britain (London), MOMA PS1 (New York) and CABINET Gallery (London). His current solo exhibition ENTER THRU MEDIEVAL WOUNDS at Julia Stoschek Foundation Berlin continues until 3 May 2026.
