2023 Rolex Awards for Enterprise: Constantino Aucca Chutas – Ancestral Roots

A descendant of Quechuan farmers, biologist Constantino Aucca Chutas felt compelled to act 30 years ago when he saw the damage being done to the forests of Peru as a result of uncontrolled logging, wildfires and land trafficking. The 2023 Rolex Awards Laureate founded Asociación de Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN) in 2000 with the aim of protecting his country’s high-mountain ecosystems. Eighteen years later, he co-founded Acción Andina – recognized by the United Nations as an example of successful climate action – to roll out his reforestation model across the Andean region, galvanizing thousands of communities into planting millions of trees.
