2023 Rolex Awards for Enterprise: Beth Koigi – A Desert Oasis

Earth’s atmosphere contains six times as much water as all the planet’s rivers combined. Kenyan entrepreneur and 2023 Rolex Awards Laureate Beth Koigi uses atmospheric water generators to pull water out of the air and is already providing people in arid regions with hundreds of thousands of litres of fresh water every month. Koigi’s next venture is a series of “water kiosks” planned for the heart of one of the largest refugee camps in Africa, Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement in northern Kenya’s extremely arid region of Turkana. A local shopkeeper who has been set up with the first unit will sell the water it generates at a fair price. This will make the system self-sustaining, with the machine paying for its own operating costs. Discover more https://on.rolex.org/3XgaQGu
