Rolex and National Geographic Perpetual Planet Amazon Expedition: In the Cloud Forest

In the cloud forests of the Andes, mist bathes the mountains. The dense, luscious vegetation captures this moisture and feeds it back into the ecosystem, eventually forming the streams and rivers that make up the Amazon River basin. Quechua biologist and National Geographic Explorer Ruthmery Pillco Huarcaya has been trekking through the cloud forests in search of Andean bears. As they roam, the bears regenerate the forests by dispersing seeds from the plants they have eaten, protected by other organic material that has passed through their digestive systems. By helping the Andean bears, Pillco Huarcaya hopes to protect and preserve the cloud forests, which are now under threat from deforestation and climate change.
