Premiere Artist Talk: Isaac Julien

Inaugurating Conversations Paris+ par Art Basel, this first talk examines the oeuvre of artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien, and his landmark exhibition ‘What Freedom is to Me’ at Tate Britain, which featured works ranging from his early films to his latest multiscreen installations. This conversation allows the audience to immerse themselves in the creative process of one of the most renowned contemporary artists working at the crossroads of art and cinema.

‣ Sir Isaac Julien, RA (b. 1960, London) is a critically acclaimed British artist and filmmaker. In 2018, Julien joined the faculty at the University of California Santa Cruz where he is a Distinguished Professor of the Arts and leads the Moving Image Lab together with Arts Professor Mark Nash. Current and recent international solo exhibitions include: ‘Isaac Julien: What Freedom is to Me’, K21, Düsseldorf, Germany, 2023 and Tate Britain, London, 2023; ‘Lina Bo Bardi: A Marvellous Entanglement’, Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA, 2023; ‘Lessons of the Hour’, Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Richmond, US, 2022–2023; ‘Once Again…(Statues Never Die)’, Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, PA, 2022; ‘Western Union: Small Boats’, Neuberger Museum, New York, 2020; ‘Looking for Langston’, Tate Britain, London, 2019; and ‘Playtime’, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, US, 2019. Julien was the recipient of the Royal Academy of Arts Charles Wollaston Award 2017 and a Goslar Kaiserring Award in 2022. He was granted a knighthood in the Queen’s Honours List in 2022.

‣ Pierre-Alexandre Mateos and Charles Teyssou are a duo of writers and curators based in Paris. Their current projects include Paris Orbital, a public program at the Pinault Collection – Bourse de Commerce on the links between Parisian mythologies and pulp culture, a publication on homosexual cruising with HEAD (Geneva) and Spector Books (Leipzig). In 2024, they will inaugurate the first session of stavanger secession, a discursive and visual program in Stavanger (Norway)
