Grégoire Courtine: The Future of Paralysis Treatment

Around 20 million people worldwide have a spinal cord injury, which has a major impact on their quality of life. By disrupting electrical signals from the brain to the rest of the body, they can cause partial or complete paralysis. Neuroscientist and Rolex Awards for Enterprise Laureate Grégoire Courtine together with neurosurgeon Jocelyne Bloch are the founders of .NeuroRestore, a research and innovation centre working on bioengineering technologies to treat spinal cord injuries. At Lausanne University Hospital, they have developed a “digital bridge” that detects brain signals, translates them into electrical impulses, and stimulates the spinal cord to restore movement in limbs that were once paralysed.
