Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director & Chief Curator of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, fellow co-chair of the 2022 Zeitz MOCAA Gala, discuss the powerful message and global resonance of ‘When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting’. The exhibition—a large-scale, global exploration of Black self-representation through figurative painting and portraiture spanning more than a century—was inaugurated in November 2022 at Cape Town’s Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, of which Gucci is a long-standing partner. The exhibition brings together more than 200 artworks by Black artists working globally into dialogue with leading Black thinkers, writers, and poets who are active today.
Gucci’s partnership with Zeitz MOCAA, a reflection of the House’s ongoing support of the arts and its commitment to promoting culture and preserving heritage, also extends to the traveling of the exhibition to major museums across the United States and Europe.
