The recipient of the 2024 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year award, he has worked closely with local communities to create a conservation programme for the Amazon through its dolphins. He also coordinates international commitments to protect them. Trujillo was a key player when the 2023 Global Agreement to Protect River Dolphins was signed by 11 countries in Asia and South America.
