2021 Rolex Awards Laureate Documentary: Luiz Rocha

Since his childhood in coastal Brazil, Luiz Rocha has been intrigued by the sea and life form that thrives in its depths – including forests of coral and a host of unknown fish. For the 2021 Rolex Awards for Enterprise Laureate, deep coral reefs offer a yardstick to monitor the ocean’s health in the face of human impacts and climate change. Having spent more than 6,000 hours underwater on some 70 scientific expeditions worldwide, Rocha is now undertaking dives to the deep, mesophotic reefs of the Maldives. In an expedition to the Rasdhoo Atoll, he discovered eight new fish species. Key to the project’s success, he believes, is the involvement of the Maldives government and people.
